Introducing the Transition Brokers Debate — Now Also at BIN@Novo Mesto

This week, the international innovation gathering BIN@Novo Mesto 2025 took place at Otočec, bringing together experts, researchers, and practitioners from across Europe to explore how sustainability, resilience, and artificial intelligence are reshaping the future of work. The event, hosted by the Faculty of Information Studies (FIS) Novo Mesto, continues the global BIN@ initiative, which connects academia, industry, and innovation ecosystems to co-create solutions for a sustainable future.

Among the central themes of this year’s edition was the question of which competences will define green and smart societies. In the Action Tank: Competences & Skills for Green and Smart Societies, Ladeja Godina Košir, Founder and Director of Circular Change, contributed insights on the skills required for a systemic transition from linearity to circularity. She emphasised the emerging and increasingly vital role of transition brokers — professionals who bridge knowledge, policy, and practice to accelerate transformative change.

The Action Tank discussion, moderated by Violeta Bulc, featured a dynamic exchange between Ladeja, Jan Peloza (MBA), and João Nunes. Ladeja noted: “We live in societies shaped by somebody’s imagination — and a bit of improvisation in between. So let’s imagine the society we want to evolve with, and deliver on it.” Their dialogue highlighted the opportunities created when green and smart perspectives work together — from new professional roles to a renewed relationship with the planet and the rise of social entrepreneurship.

In her keynote address, Violeta Bulc captured the spirit of the event with a forward-looking reflection: “We know we have entered eco-civilisation when humanity remembers that to be truly smart, we must first be green — and that technology serves life only when it breathes with nature.” Her message aligned closely with the mission of BIN@2025, which aims to strengthen the connection between technological advancement, human values, and planetary well-being.

The Novo Mesto gathering also continued and deepened the long-standing collaboration between Circular Change and the BIN@ network, which began in 2021 at BIN@Porto. Through shared learning, partnership, and community building, Circular Change remains committed to advancing the role of transition brokers and supporting the development of competences that will guide Europe toward a regenerative, inclusive, and future-ready society.

Circular Change is actively fostering the conversation on transition brokers across diverse global stages — from Expo Osaka to Paris InfraWeek, and now in Novo Mesto.
