Marko Zidanšek has been leading one of the largest waste management companies in Slovenia with more than 220 employees – Simbio d.o.o. – since 2005. He is one of the main initiators and developers of the Celje Regional Waste Treatment Centre, which is the first centre of its kind in Slovenia. Currently, it treats waste for 46 municipalities in a modern way. This is approximately a quarter of all Slovenian municipalities. The Celje Regional Waste Treatment Centre is still the only centre which includes thermal treatment of light fraction waste which makes it the only centre to completely fulfill the basic principle of waste management in the European Union – the five-level hierarchical scale.
After completing the Celje Secondary School for Catering and Tourism, he worked as a sole proprietor until 2003, when he started working as Assistant Director at Javne naprave which is now called Simbio d.o.o. During his work at the company he was engaged in company organisation and was involved with the Celje Regional Waste Treatment Centre I and II. He extended his knowledge by studying at the College of Administration in Ljubljana (now called the Faculty of Administration of the University of Ljubljana). He finished the study of public administration and became an administrative organiser, BSc. Later he finished his Master’s degree at the Faculty of National and European Studies at Brdo pri Kranju and became a Master of Science
In 2005 he took over the management of the Simbio d.o.o. waste management company, which performs waste collection and disposal activities in 12 municipalities of the region and acts as the public utility service for 24 municipalities which have co-invested in the project of the Celje Regional Waste Treatment Centre. At the centre, waste from other municipalities is also treated, currently for 46 municipalities. Due to wise investments into constant upgrades and updates of the centre’s technologies the centre is cost-efficient.
Marko Zidanšek has excellent organisational, leadership and communication skills. He gained his professional skills through numerous functions he has performed in his professional as well as political career. He was President of the Zarja Trnovlje Cultural and Arts Society, President of the Supervisory Board of Elektro Celje, President of the Supervisory Board of Nepremičnine Celje, President of the Supervisory Board of Vodovod-Kanalizacija (2002–2008), President of the Programme Council of TV Celje, Deputy Mayor of the City Municipality of Celje (1999-2010) and Authorised Representative of the Mayor of the City Municipality of Celje for Finance and Economy (from 2011 on), Vice-President of the Supervisory Board of Energetika Celje, Vice-President and President of the Celje Football Club, President of the Women’s Basketball Club, President of the Supervisory Board of Holding Slovenske elektrarne (2012–2014), President of the City Board of the Slovenian Christian Democrats Party (SKD) and after the union with the Slovenian People’s Party (SLS), the President of the City Board of the Slovenian People’s Party in Celje, President of the Slovenian People’s Party (from 2014), Member of the National Council (from 2017). He has also actively participated in numerous Councils of Institutions, Clubs and Companies, for example as Member of the Supervisory Board of TRC, Member of the Administrative Board of the College of Economy, Member of the Council of the Secondary School for Catering and Tourism, Member of the Council of the Ljubečna Primary School, Member of the Administrative Board of ZPO, Member of the Council of the Celje General Hospital, Deputy President of the Administrative Board of the College of Traffic Engineering etc.
